Aide sentenced to six months in death of boy with autism
October 19th, 2007From (NY) Newsday:
A former state health aide was sentenced Friday to six months in jail and five years of probation for the death of a 13-year-old autistic boy.
Nadeem Mall pleaded guilty to criminally negligent homicide in July. Under a plea agreement, Mall testified against former co-worker, Edwin Tirado, who was convicted of manslaughter earlier this month.
Mall, 33, was driving the van when Tirado used an improper restraint on Jonathan Carey after he began acting up during a Feb. 15 shopping trip, prosecutors said.
The boy stopped breathing but the two men ran errands before returning to O.D. Heck Developmental Center near Albany. Carey was declared dead at a hospital an hour later.
