Autism spotlighted in Ontario election campaign
October 1st, 2007Liberal Premier Dalton McGuinty promised voters in 2003 that he would restore funding for therapy for children with autism. Just one problem: he didn’t. His opponents this time are alleging that McGuinty has a history of “broken promises,” bringing autism services into the spotlight in the current election campaign.
The focus of the controversy is intensive behavior intervention or IBI, a system of behaviour modification to that is said to teach children language and social skills. It costs an average of $70,000 per year per child.
