Paris Hilton and the R-word
September 17th, 2007Paris Hilton has become the latest celebrity to use the word “retarded” as an insult.
When asked recently whether she had plans to adopt four babies, Hilton said to PEOPLE magazine, “No, that’s retarded. I’m not.”
Last week it was Robert Redford. Before that it was Phillies pitcher Brett Myers. Before that it was Lindsay Lohan. And on and on… (At least Myers expressed regret over the incident, although he stopped short of apologizing.)
It bears repeating: people with intellectual disabilities face prejudice and discrimination daily. Use of the word “retarded” as an insult only serves to compound the stigma they experience.
