Is this a first? Check the NYT wedding announcements…
September 17th, 2007… for a warm, gracious account of the wedding of Kay Lipper and Andy Anderson. The reader is treated to the story of how the couple met, where they went on their first date, how he proposed. If you’re paying close attention, you’ll also notice that she has a learning disability and he has a developmental disability.
Lest we forget: As recently as 1971, marriage between adults with intellectual disabilities was prohibited in twenty-four states. A book on the subject that’s worth revisiting is Like Normal People, by then-Washington Post reporter Robert Meyers (McGraw-Hill, 1978). It’s the story of Meyers’ brother Roger and Virginia Hensler, two people with developmental disabilities who married in 1977 against the advice of many.
