Protesters with disabilities block Chicago buildings
September 12th, 2007From the Chicago Sun-Times and Chicago Tribune:
A group of activists in wheelchairs blockaded two Chicago buildings this week, stranding hundreds of office workers.
On Tuesday, the State of Illinois office building in the Loop was shut down for more than five hours as some 200 protesters from the advocacy group ADAPT blocked the building’s entrances and exits.
Earlier in the day, protesters blocked escalators in the building and turnstiles and vending machines at a transit authority station in the center. The blockade ended after activists otained promises that the governor would meet with the group before October 17.
A similar protest was staged Monday at the American Medical Association building. Among other demands, ADAPT wants the AMA to support the Community Choice Act, which would change Medicaid policy to favor allowing people with disabilities to remain in their own homes.
