Key legislator calls for police presence after abuse allegations in Texas institutions

September 7th, 2007

From the Dallas Morning News:

Jerry Madden, the chair of the Corrections Committee in the Texas House of Representatives, called this week for aggressive enforcement measures in the wake of hundreds of reports of mistreatment and abuse inside the state’s institutions for people with intellectual disabilities.

Among his recommendations: the creation of a police presence inside the agency that oversees the institutions, similar to one that was created to cope with an abuse scandal in the state’s juvenile justice system. “The Legislature must not miss another opportunity to protect innocent Texans,” Madden said.
